Clutch Kit: What Is a Clutch?

All drivers use this system but are they sure they know exactly what the clutch does? The clutch is a device found in the car that allows you to engage and disengage the engine from the driving shaft.

An interesting fact about the clutch is that when it was first invented and engineered it was made out of asbestos. Now, on all modern cars, it is made out of ceramic. Ceramic is a strong material that can withstand harsh forces. The clutch is one of the most common parts used and is prone to clutch burnout so ceramic limits the time it takes to have to get it replaced.

The clutch is made up of friction discs that compress against each other or against a flywheel. A flywheel is an object that resists any changes in speed. This is also a mechanism that stores energy when torque is applied when the piston gets fired during an engine phase.

The clutch also has two kinds of systems: wet and dry. A wet clutch has been coated with lubricant that keeps the surface clean. You might be thinking about the friction factor about now. Because the wet clutch has been stacked with multiple discs it compensates for the friction. Slippage gets eliminated when the car is fully engaged at maximum power.

A dry clutch uses only friction to work and has not been coated with the lubricant. Since a protective layer of oil has not been applied to the dry clutch, the life is decreased due to wear from having to constantly use it.

When driving there are always precautions you need to take. Try not to burn the clutch out. Many drivers burn it out by over-revving when in gear. Mechanisms grind against the disc wearing it down quite rapidly.

Drivers also need to be cautious about how gears are changed. When the car has been put into gear you need to smoothly release the clutch and apply throttle at the same time. Jerking could damage your car.

The clutch system is a difficult part of the car to reach and always needs to be checked by a certified mechanic who knows his way around a clutch kit. It is also important to get the car serviced to avoid uncomfortable and dangerous driving.

If you are ever worried that your car might be having clutch problems make sure that you visit your closest workshop.
